In 2008, SIAL attracted 5,500 exhibitors from 101 countries covering 19 product sectors and food industries. It welcomed up to 150,000 visitors from 185 countries, all seeking European and international suppliers and purchasers. Professionals from across the world are drawn to Paris as one of the world's gastronomic capitals and in 2008 58% of visitors came from outside France. The event also created a buzz in the media, with 1,500 journalists from 45 countries attending, resulting in over 1,630 articles in specialised and general media. They were attracted by the 800 new products being showcased as well as the awards which highlighted the most innovative ideas. On top of this there were 150 talks, meetings and workshops.
