Luxembourg hosts around 200 eco-companies, working in renewable energy, waste management, water and eco-construction. Their efforts are supported by public agencies and research institutes. Under the Government’s Clean Technology Action Plan, a private initiative backed by the Ministry of the Economy is building a dedicated zone where cleantech companies can establish operations and access services and infrastructure that permit them to grow.

Among Luxembourg-based cleantech companies going global are SOLER, investing in hydro and wind power generation for domestic use and export, Epuramat, developing a revolutionary waste-water processing system, L.E.E.’s selling biogas plants in Europe, Asia and Africa, ECRES, reducing clients’ electricity bills with its LED technology, Rotarex, providing China with compressed natural gas (CNG) conversion kits that reduce pollution from old cars and motorbikes, and Prefalux, whose technology is heating scientists’ dwellings in Belgium’s “Princess Elisabeth” Antarctic research centre.
